Nintendo Announce An End To Wii U Production

Nintendo are very shortly to cease production of Wii U units, it’s been announced.

Nintendo’s official Japanese website states “production is due to end soon” on the only available model, with others already “no longer in production” and therefore unavailable for purchase. Nintendo of America have also today issued a statement to Kotaku, which reads:

“We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.”

Today’s announcement comes just days after a Nintendo spokesman said the company were still committed to producing Wii U hardware, saying of the console “Even though the Nintendo Switch is slated to go on sale, production is scheduled to continue”. Unless they’re planning to push Wii U units to retail alongside the Switch early next year I’d say at this point that’s probably not entirely true, is it now, Mr. Nintendo?
