Pokémon X & Y Detailed Via Nintendo Direct

Earlier today Nintendo held a Direct video event which focused on the upcoming handheld Pokémon titles, X & Y.

Perhaps the most exciting announcement was that Pokémon X and Pokémon Y players will not, as previously expected, be playing the game solely with Chespin, Fennekin or Froakie as their companion. Instead they will be able to pick a classic partner Pokémon from the original Red and Blue games, namely Bulbasaur, Charmander, or Squirtle to join their quest too. Nostalgia is a wonderful thing.

Furthermore it was revealed that once the Pokémon has evolved into Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise and the player has obtained the newly introduced Mega Stone and Mega Ring items, the Pokémon will be able to “Mega Evolve” while in battle granting “overwhelming powers never before seen in a Pokémon game”.

Junichi Masuda, director of Game Freak Inc., also announced Pokémon Bank and Poké Transporter, a cloud-based feature which allows players to store up to 3,000 of their Pokémon online and transport them between franchise titles, including Black, White, X and Y, easily.

The catch? It’s a paid service. The new software will be available via the 3DS eShop, with more details promised to be coming around New Year.

The last big announcement in today’s presentation was the European release date of two limited edition 3DS XL hardware packages featuring Pokémon X and Y characters, Xerneas and Yveltal.

The red or blue designs will be released September 27th, two weeks before the game, but unlike previous Nintendo bundles they will not include a pre-installed version of the associated software.

Pokémon X & Pokémon Y for Nintendo 3DS launch in the UK on October 12th.
