Rare’s Old IPs Could Be Rebooting On Xbox One Kinect

Rare Ltd, the company behind the forthcoming Kinect Sports Rivals for Xbox One, and developer on some of gaming’s greatest outings in times-gone-by, such as the Banjo Kazooie series, Perfect Dark, Killer Instinct, Donkey Kong Country and Goldeneye 64 – released 16 years ago this weekend, and still one of the most fun local multi-player experiences ever – has spoken out about some of their past game franchises, and how they intend to relaunch the games on Microsoft’s Xbox One, using Kinect “in the right way”.

Speaking at Gamescom, Rare’s Studio Creative Director Simon Woodroffe has discussed the possibility of a new Banjo title, saying the character’s “very popular internally” and “a lot of people want to do stuff with Banjo.”

Talking about Xbox One’s Kinect pack-in, and how that benefits developers now they don’t need to shoe-horn gimmicks into games to sell the peripheral, Woodroffe told the magazine “Now it’s in the box, use it where it make sense, don’t where it doesn’t. We’ve got some ideas for how to use it in the right way.”

“We should be inventing new genres, inventing new ways to play. And this sensor gives us new opportunities to do it, with the fidelity it has now.” he went on, although, ‘new ways to play’ obviously doesn’t necessarily mean new IP, as alongside the previously mentioned Banjo reboot, Woodroffe hinted a new Perfect Dark may be on the cards, saying “We’ve got an idea for that. It would be controller plus Kinect.”

I’ve not been all that sure about Kinect or the PS-Eye this generation, where the ‘features’ were thrown down the player’s throat with reckless abandon, but with the Xbox One’s Kinect pre-packed, and the PS-Eye’s Playroom coming preloaded on PS4, I’m somewhat hopeful the next-gen’s camera tech will see less gimmicks, and more alternative ways to play, which enhance, rather than detract from the core gameplay.

Rare revisiting some of their much-loved old IP could be fantastic – or it could ruin those childhood classics with shameless arm-waggling and obscenity shouting. We’ll see.

The company’s current project, Kinect Sports Rivals, is due for release exclusively on Xbox One in Spring 2014.
